Party for cycling generations SC Cottbus/Radsportclub celebrated its 50th anniversary in November. The founding anniversary was celebrated with a party glistening with precious metals from the Olympics and world championships. It was a return to the cradle of SCC in what is now Cottbus Town Hall Cottbus.
It was a party for cycling generations. And it was an anniversary celebration that shone with the glory of Olympic victories and world and European championship titles. From a chronicler's point of view, one figure illustrates why the RSC's predecessor, SC Cottbus, is one of the most successful cycling clubs in the world: from 1974 to 1992, medals from men's and junior world championships were brought back to Lusatia year after year.
For Cottbus Mayor Holger Kelch (CDU), this is a reason to be proud of this club. ‘But also of sport in Cottbus as a whole. No one who wants to be involved in politics in Cottbus can ignore sport,’ emphasised the mayor in conversation with RSC President Jens Schober.
From the first 15 talented cyclists who moved into what is now the town hall in 1969, to Olympic champion Olaf Pollack, who made his debut as a presenter, and world champions Bernd Drogan, Hans-Joachim Hartnick and Jens Glücklich, to today's cycling aces Emma Hinze and Maximilian Levy – no racer, coach or mechanic wanted to miss this grand reunion celebration. Cottbus double Olympic champion and four-time sprint world champion Lutz Heßlich lamented: ‘Our cruise was already booked. It's a shame
